FAQ's

What are Memorial QR Slate Coasters?

A set of four natural slate coasters engraved with your loved one's name, birth year, year of passing and a unique QR code.

This QR code links to a Virtual Memorial built by you where you can share historical information, memories, accomplishments, videos and photos. The Virtual Memorial and voice feature are also included with all purchases.

How does the Voice Feature work?

The Voice Feature is completely optional and is included with all coaster purchases.

When you are creating the Virtual Memorial, there is a section to upload a short voice clip of your loved one and answer some personality tuning questions.

Once you add this to the Virtual Memorial, a "Talk With" button will appear, and you can have a conversation with your loved one's voice and personality.

How do I use the coasters?

Simply scan the QR code on any coaster using a smartphone or QR code scanner. This will direct you to the Virtual Memorial where you can view and share memories.

What’s included with a purchase?

  1. Four slate coasters customized with the name, birth year and year of passing.
  2. A unique QR code engraved on the front of each coaster.
  3. Optional back engraving: a saying, fingerprint, heartbeat or voice waveform.
  4. A Virtual Memorial you can edit at any time.
  5. The Virtual Memorial voice feature.
  6. Customer support to assist with setup and ongoing questions.

How do the back engraving options work?

You can add an engraved saying (up to 60 characters), a fingerprint, a heartbeat, or a voice waveform to the back of your coasters.

For the fingerprint, heartbeat and waveform, simply upload a clear photo when you order and our engraving team takes it from there. An ink print, a funeral home fingerprint card, an EKG strip, or a screenshot of a voicemail waveform all work great.

One design applies to all four coasters in the set. We review every file before engraving and will reach out if we need a better image.

How do I get a fingerprint for engraving?

We need a clear digital photo of a fingerprint. Here are the most common ways to get one:

If your loved one has passed: Contact the funeral home that handled arrangements. Many funeral homes take fingerprints during their care process, even if you didn't request one. Ask if they have a fingerprint on file and request a photo or scan of it. Note: we can't accept physical fingerprint cards by mail, so ask the funeral home to email you a digital copy, or take a clear photo of the card yourself.

Taking a print yourself: Use a standard ink pad from any office supply store. Roll the finger gently from one side to the other on the pad, then roll it the same way onto plain white paper. Photograph the result.

No ink pad? Try the pencil method: Rub a pencil back and forth on paper to create a dark graphite patch. Press the fingertip into the graphite, then press clear tape onto the fingertip. Peel the tape off, stick it onto white paper, and photograph it.

What are the image requirements?

You can upload one image. For best results:

  • Photograph in bright, even lighting, directly above the print
  • Make sure the full print is in focus and fills most of the frame
  • Use plain white paper with good contrast (dark print, clean background)
  • Avoid shadows, glare, and blur

Will you edit or clean up my image?

We do minor cleanup, such as adjusting contrast and removing small smudges, to prepare your print for engraving. We can't reconstruct incomplete, blurry, or heavily smudged prints, so the quality of the final engraving depends on the quality of the image you submit.

Soundwave Engraving

What is a soundwave engraving?

We engrave the visual waveform of a meaningful audio clip, like a voicemail, a recorded "I love you," or a laugh, onto your memorial piece.

How do I get a waveform image?

We need a clear digital image of the waveform. Ways to get one:

Voice memo apps: Record or open the clip in your phone's voice memo app (Voice Memos on iPhone, Recorder on Android) and take a screenshot of the waveform shown on screen.

Voicemail apps: Many visual voicemail apps display a waveform while the message plays. Take a screenshot.

Free online tools: Sites and apps that generate waveform images from an audio file (search "audio waveform generator") let you upload your clip and download or screenshot the resulting image.

What makes a good waveform image?

  • A short clip (roughly 2 to 10 seconds) produces a bolder, more distinctive waveform; long clips look flat and compressed
  • Screenshot with the waveform as large on screen as possible
  • Good contrast between the waveform and its background
  • Crop out surrounding buttons, text, and interface elements if you can

What are the upload requirements?

One image per order.

Will you edit my waveform image?

We do minor cleanup, such as adjusting contrast, to prepare your image for engraving. The final engraving depends on the quality and clarity of the image you submit.

Heartbeat Engraving

What is a heartbeat engraving?

We engrave the EKG-style line of a real heartbeat, whether from a loved one who has passed, a baby's ultrasound, or your own.

How do I get a heartbeat image?

We need a clear digital photo of a heartbeat tracing. Common sources:

Hospital or hospice records: EKG strips are part of standard medical records and can be requested by the patient or legal next of kin. Ask specifically for an EKG or cardiac rhythm strip, then photograph it.

Ultrasound printouts: Many prenatal ultrasound printouts include a heartbeat strip. Photograph that section.

Smartwatch ECG: Apple Watch and similar devices save ECG recordings in the Health app, which can be exported as a PDF. Take a screenshot or photo of the tracing.

What makes a good heartbeat image?

  • Bright, even lighting, photographed directly above the paper
  • The tracing in focus, flat, and unwrinkled
  • Strong contrast between the heartbeat line and the background

What are the upload requirements?

One image per order.

Will you edit my heartbeat image?

We do minor cleanup, such as adjusting contrast, to prepare your image for engraving. The final engraving depends on the quality and clarity of the image you submit.

What does the Virtual Memorial include?

  1. A biography
  2. Photo gallery
  3. Video gallery
  4. An obituary link
  5. The voice feature
  6. Burial location (if applicable)
  7. An interactive tribute section for others to leave a message including pictures and videos to the Virtual Memorial. You have control over whether others can leave a tribute.
  8. Public or private mode

How does photo and video upload work?

We allow direct upload of photos and videos to the Virtual Memorial.

Can I update the content on the Virtual Memorial?

Yes, you can update the content on the Virtual Memorial at any time, allowing you to add new memories and photos. You can also use the voice feature immediately or set it up in the future.

What if Memorygram goes out of business?

We know you're trusting us with something irreplaceable, and that trust means everything to us.

Memorygram is a family owned business. We're profitable, we have no debt, and that's been true for over a decade. There are no outside investors or VCs who can push us to sell or cut corners, because we aren't beholden to anyone but the families we serve. This is our life's work, and we're in it for the long haul.

That said, we never want you to feel like your memories are locked away with us. Everything you add to your memorial, every photo, video, voice message, and written memory, is yours to download and keep anytime. In one download you can save all the content to your phone, your computer, iCloud, Google Drive, wherever feels right for your family.

And the coasters themselves? They are permanent keepsakes, made to last for generations. They don't need us, or anyone, to keep telling your loved one's story.

Will the QR still work long term if technology changes?

Yes. The QR code on each coaster simply opens your virtual memorial, which lives online as a shareable web link. That means your memorial is not dependent on one specific phone or app, and you can always share the memorial directly by sending the link to family and friends. The coasters are a convenient way to access it with a scan, and the memorial itself is designed to remain accessible over time.

Can this be used for pets?

Yes! Many of our customers create memorial keepsakes and Virtual Memorials for both humans and pets. Our Virtual Memorial is built for both.
